When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.
Or that it would end so painfully.
Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.
As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?
Review ~
Whenever I think about writing a review for Back To You I come up with nothing in mind. The only thing I can say is WOW. It was absolutely beautiful. I loved the fact that they first become really good friends right from the start. The flashbacks from present to past helped with knowing exactly what history they have and what hurts they need to overcome. The whole story flowed beautifully and effortlessly that I just get sucked into their story.
The odds of the two people who are different in many accounts and becoming friends were astonishing to everyone but felt right for Michael and Lauren. They are just perfect for each other. Their hearts knew it but their stubborn minds had trouble catching up. Their friendship blossomed into love before they confess and are torn apart. They needed to talk but they avoided it until it was too much and it just burst out. It's a painful but soulful story of two people from total different backgrounds and making a common ground where no one is different and alone. I honestly don't want to say to much that would spoil the story for you. One thing is for sure, go READ. NOW.
"See, Red? When life hands you lemons, you know what you gotta do now.""Yes, Mr. Cliche, I know what I have to do. I make lemonade.""No," he said. "You scream, 'Fuck you, lemons!"'
Fighting circumstances and hurdles thrown your way is a common knowledge of what life really is. Sometimes knowing and experiencing are total different aspects to it however this is a fact of life. Screaming fuck you lemons is the perfect way to fight. Sometimes not listening to you're own advice is the perfect and natural thing to do. That proves we are flawed and make stupid mistakes. Sometimes the worst mistake ever.
That is what Michael did.
Lauren should have moved past her fears and pursued the man she loved. But did she? No, of course not. We don't confront our fears when some part of you warns not to risk getting hurt than you already are.
“His face, like everything she knew about him, was purely contradictory… He was too lovely to be menacing, but too intense to be innocent.”
This is an excellent way of describing Michael. That is what he is, what circumstances made him. Perhaps when a person has gone through awfully a lot. The brain automatically is defensive and protects without thinking twice. Projects an image that screams miles away to everyone. Take a step closer and you will be hurt. Lauren saw beyond that.
What happens when a person gets to close to fire. They get burned. That is exactly what happens to Lauren she gets too close to an intriguing, intense man and as she gets to know him she puts all her fears aside and gets sucked in. Until it gets to a point where he becomes everything to her and she will going anything for him.
"She couldn’t help but smile at the irony that the baddest boy in school could somehow always make her feel like the world was good. And when he winked at her, she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that from that moment on, she would do anything for him."

"And there he sat, looking outwardly composed, and all she could think of was that pond. Because something about him, something in his eyes, divulged the secret; there was a whole world in there, thriving just below the surface where no one could see it."
Everyone has past. Some have it easy and some have it hard. Sometimes a mix of both. Michael from a young ages goes through so much that his eyes reflect a deep dark secret that has him all strung up.
“I always knew I would fall in love with you," he said softly, "but you were never supposed to love me back.”
With having parents who fail to love him with an exception of his brother. Who he feels like he failed. (Believing if it weren't for him his brother would still be alive. But come on what stopped him from getting a cab and pick his little brother up.) He never believes that anyone can really love him back. It's not surprising to us people when he see what an amazing guy he is. He just needs to see it.
"Well, sometimes if something is really important to you, it gets stuck in your body. So even if your mind thinks that it’s gone, it’s still there, kind of hiding inside of you, just waiting for you to remember. It never goes away."
True love has a knack of never leaving, no matter how hard you try to make it go away. Pretend all you want. It's always there and leads you back to home. To him.
Which leads me to this quote below. Your heart aches when your alone, away from him and you pretend it not to be true. Living this fake life until nature brings you back and your heart comes alive.
"That thing that made her heart come alive in her chest and her body thrum with emotion and her soul felt like it was home. Right back to him, always to him."
"It was about redemption. Everyone deserved a chance to be redeemed."
Yes, everyone does. The reason as to why we have second chances. We should never waste or take it lightly. Second chances at love. Second chances in making all wrongs right. Second chances in forgiving.
